The funding to build and maintain our roads primarily falls to Charleston County.  To help finance this effort, County voters have twice approved half-cent sales taxes, once in a 2004 referendum and once in a 2016 referendum.

What ARE road improvemenTS?

Road improvements are the projects listed in the referendums.  These are large projects to add new roads and widen existing roads.

In addition, the road improvements includes many smaller projects to improve intersections, repave roads, and add sidewalks.

2004 sales tax

The 2004 half-cent sales tax will provide $xxx for road improvements.  The tax is expected to expire in 2027.  To-date, $xxx  has been collected.

As shown in the side panel, there were XX projects listed in this referendum and the subsequent 2006 bond referendum.  The status of the projects are:

  • X% complete
  • X% in construction

  • X% in the planning stage

2016 sales tax

The 2016 half-cent tax will provide $xxx for road improvements.  We are XX years into tax that can last up to 25 year tax.  To-date, $xxx has been collected.

As shown in the side panel, there were 9 projects listed in this referendum.  The status of the projects are:
