  • All County funds for Maybank Highway upgrades went to resurfacing it, to add the lane onto Johns Island, and for the Northern Pitchfork

Sea Island Community Sidewalk

MAYBANK BETWEEN MAIN/BOHICKET AND RIVER

Both the City and County envision this section of Maybank Highway to be developed using a "town and country" concept.  This approach includes:

  • Commercial nodes at Main/Bohicket Roads, near Crowne Commons Way, and at River Road
  • New roads parallel to Maybank to relieve traffic on Maybank
  • New roads to connect Maybank with Brownwood and Cane Slash Roads to also relieve traffic on Maybank

The town and country concept along with the commercial nodes can be viewed in the Johns Island Community Plan while the proposed new roads can be viewed in the Johns Island Maybank Highway Corridor Overlay Zoning District.

The approach the City and County are taking is to incrementally add the new roads as the parcels are developed.  These roads would be built and funded by the developers.  As an example, Riva Ridge Drive in the Live Oak Square development is one of these new roads (see image).  The City may also use proceeds from the proposed Municipal Improvement District to fund these projects.

Some of the improvements the City envisions on Maybank Highway include:

  • Align Southwick Drive and St Johns Woods Parkway and install a traffic signal
  • Install a traffic signal at the Harold Arnold Way (Live Oak Square development) and Zelasko Drive (where a new medical facility may be located)

Other improvements that would occur are those that would be required by SCDOT for new developments, e.g. turn lanes.

Maybank and River Road Intersection

A County project for this intersection was completed in 2018.  No additional County improvements are planned.  Improvements to this intersection are anticipated to be part of the Mark Clark Extension project.  Click here to see that project's map.

Pitchforks

The Northern and Southern Pitchforks were envisioned as part of the Maybank Highway Improvement Recommendations.  These roads are intended to relieve traffic at the Maybank/River intersection.  You can read more about the pitchforks here and here.
