Charleston County wants your feedback on the alternatives for Segment C of the Main Road Corridor Project. They are accepting feedback from April 28 to May 27, 2022.
We believe you should choose Alternative 6 because it is the only alternative that:
1) Respects the culture and environment of our community while providing the necessary traffic relief.
2) Does not widen roads (and hence take people's property and impact the tree canopy) where the County's own projections show that widening is not needed (for example, Plow Ground Road or Bohicket south of Edenvale).
3) Can be built-to-cost by implementing only the most cost effective portions that are within budget.
4) Since it is not contiguous, improvements from Angel Oak Road to Chisolm Roads can be implemented before Segment A (the flyover at Main and 17) is completed, thereby avoiding a "traffic Armageddon" at the Maybank/Main/Bohicket intersection.
They took an effective, context-based design and made several significant changes to it using an outdated "roads-before-community" approach. This makes it look more adversely impactful than it really is. But all is not lost!
We recommend you cut-and-paste the following in your response to the County to bring Alternative 6 back to what the community intended.
Alternative 6 is the preferred solution to solve our traffic issues on Main and Bohicket Roads. The County should implement Alternative 6 but with the following changes as originally proposed by Rational Roads for Johns Island:
If you think there are other changes that need to be made to Alternative 6, include them in your response to the County.
You can provide your response to the County here (the response form is at the bottom of the page at this link).
